MEET THE DOCTORS

**Dr. David E. Morris Dr. Morris was born and raised in San Jose and his parents still live in the same house he grew up in. He attended dental school in San Francisco at the University of the Pacific and graduated in 1995. Upon graduation, he was accepted to Columbia University in New York to complete a two year pediatric hospital residency training program. There he served as chief resident at the Columbia-Presbyterian Children’s Hospital. Upon completion of his residency, Dr. Morris worked in the San Diego area for several years. In 2001 he returned to Fremont to establish his practice as Young Smiles. Dr. Morris’ professional affiliations include the following:

American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry California Society of Pediatric Dentistry American Dental Association California Dental Association Southern Alameda County Dental Society In his free time Dr. Morris enjoys pursuing his hobbies, which include scuba diving, camping, traveling, and photography.

**Dr. Shilpa Avula Dr. Avula grew up in the Central Valley of California and currently lives in the Bay Area with her husband and their two young children. Dr. Avula knew from high school that she wanted to be a dentist. She completed both undergraduate and dental school through an accelerated honors program at The University of the Pacific in just five years. She received her DDS degree from Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in 2001.

She then completed her specialty training program in Pediatric Dentistry at St. Barnabas Hospital in New York in 2004. Dr. Avula has since been in private practice and is a part-time faculty member in the department of Pediatric Dentistry at the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry. Although Dr. Avula was initially drawn to dentistry for its ability to help people, she most appreciates the joys of working with children and the uniqueness of each day.

**Dr. Mala Gopal “Clinical excellence along with personal care is my number one priority! I love children and feel I get transformed into their world of fun, imagination and magic.” Dr. Gopal loves her profession because it gives her the opportunity to interact with so many people on a daily basis. She feels fortunate to have a career that allows her to improve her young patients’ health, confidence and self-esteem.

Dr. Gopal received her Dental Degree from the Annamalai University School of Dentistry. She was awarded her M.S. in Pediatric Dentistry from the UCSF School of Dentistry in 1999. She’s a member of the American Dental Association, the American Association of Pediatric Dentists and the California Society of Pediatric Dentistry. She also speaks Tamil, Hindi and Kannada.

Dr. Gopal enjoys classical Indian dancing, classical violin, and cooking. She loves to read and spend time with her husband, son, daughter and their Labrador Retriever!

**Dr. Phi Luong grew up in Orange County and obtained her Bachelors in Biological Sciences at UC San Diego. She fell in love with the Bay Area after attending UC San Francisco School of Dentistry where she graduated in 2011. She was honored with the Hu Friedy and Omicron Kappa Upsilon scholarship for her outstanding service and leadership. She earned her certificate in pediatric dentistry from St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia and is a Board Certified pediatric dentist.

She grew up with six siblings and enjoys the idea of creating great life long relationships with patients and parents. With her kind approach, she enjoys helping patients have a positive dental experience. She understands the importance of providing children with a solid foundation in their formative years to set them on the right track for life.

Dr. Phi is fluent in Vietnamese and speaks conversational Spanish. She enjoys spending time with her family, reading, working out, supporting local artists, and traveling.
