Avoid these habits that will quickly trash your teeth

Everyone wants a great smile, and Dr. Li can make your smile look wonderful. Healthy teeth not only look good, but they also give you a good bite. Of course, it’s best to avoid damaging dental habits altogether. That way you can have the smile and oral health you deserve. But do you know which of those seemingly innocent habits are wrecking your teeth?

Chewing on Ice – It may be all-natural and sugar-free, but this habit is far from harmless. Chomping on hard, frozen cubes of ice can chip or even crack your teeth. And mindlessly munching while marathoning Netflix can irritate the soft tissue inside teeth leading ice-chewers to have regular toothaches and sensitivity. Hot foods and cold foods may cause a quick, sharp jab of pain. Dr. Li says next time you get the urge for ice, reach for some gum or a sugar-free popsicle instead.

Cough Drops – Cough drops may be found in the medicine aisle, but that doesn’t mean they’re healthy. In fact, most are glorified hard candy and similarly loaded with sugar. So make sure you use a sugar free option such as Fisherman Friends.

Playing Sports Without A Mouth Guard – Playing sports can be a blast, but if you play football, hockey, or some other contact sport, don’t forget your mouth guard. This piece of molded plastic protects your upper teeth from damage. Without it, your teeth may get chipped or worse, knocked out when the game gets rough. A well fitted sportsguard can help prevent concussions and TMJ injuries. Our advice, purchase a self-fitting mouthguard, or come in and have one custom made right here in our Downtown Ottawa dentist office.

Tongue Piercings – Tongue piercings, while stylish, can lead to tooth damage and fracturing. Since it is easy to bite down on the hard metal stud, lip piercings can pose a similar risk. Additionally, if the metal rubs against your gums, it can lead to gum damage and even tooth loss. Mouths are a breeding ground for bacteria, so all oral piercings increase the risk of infections and sores. Our staff would also like to warn those considering tongue piercings of the chance of accidentally piercing a large blood vessel causing severe bleeding. If you are thinking about piercings, be sure to discuss the health risks with your dentist first.

Teeth Grinding – Teeth grinding, also known as bruxism, will wear your teeth down over time. It is most often caused by sleeping habits and stress, which makes it difficult to control. This fixation causes damage similar to that of chewing hard foods, so avoiding these types of snacks during the day can reduce the pain and harm originating from this habit. Also, wearing a mouthguard at night can alleviate pain and minimize the damage caused by grinding while sleeping.

Opening Stuff With Your Teeth – Your teeth need to last a lifetime, so stop using them as a multi-purpose tool! Opening soda bottles, can tabs, or plastic packaging with your teeth may be convenient, but this is one habit that makes dentists cringe. As a cosmetic and general dentist in Ottawa, Dr. Li has seen first hand the destruction this practice can cause and warns her patients that, “using your teeth as tools can cause them to crack or chip. Instead, keep bottle openers or scissors handy.”

Bottom line, your teeth should only be used for eating. You want your beautiful smile to last a lifetime, particularly if you’ve invested in dental improvements such as Invisalign or dental implants. Don’t let what seems like a simple habit wreck your progress.

Saving a Knocked Out Tooth

If a tooth is completely knocked out of your mouth, time is of the essence. The tooth should be handled very gently. Avoid touching the root surface itself. If it is dirty, quickly and gently rinse it in water. Do not use soap or any other cleaning agent, and never scrape or brush the tooth. If possible, the tooth should be placed back into its socket as soon as possible. The less time the tooth is out of its socket, the better the chance for saving it. Call a dentist immediately!

If you cannot put the tooth back in its socket, it needs to be kept moist in special solutions that are available at many local drugstores (such as Save-A-Tooth). If those solutions are unavailable, you should put the tooth in milk. Doing this will keep the root cells in your tooth moist and alive for a few hours. Another option is to simply put the tooth in your mouth between your gum and cheek. Do not place the tooth in regular tap water because the root surface cells do not tolerate it.

Once the tooth has been put back in its socket, your dentist will evaluate it and will check for any other dental and facial injuries. If the tooth has not been placed back into its socket, your dentist will clean it carefully and replace it. A stabilizing splint will be placed for a few weeks. Depending on the stage of root development, your dentist or endodontist may start root canal treatment a week or two later. A medication may be placed inside the tooth followed by a permanent root canal filling at a later date.

The length of time the tooth was out of the mouth and the way the tooth was stored before reaching the dentist will affect the chances of saving the tooth. Again, immediate treatment is essential. Taking all these factors into account, your dentist or endodontist may discuss other treatment options with you.

The most common kids dental problems

Parents always want the very best for their children and their dental health. From the time the first teeth grow in, it’s essential to promote healthy oral hygiene habits to avoid the most common dental problems children face. Dental-related issues are common in children of all ages, which is why preventative and proactive care is so important.

Here are seven of the most common dental problems that children and adolescents experience:

Tooth Decay (Cavities):

Most young children aren’t proficient at brushing and flossing without supervision. Coupled with the fact that some kids might have a sugar-heavy diet, cavities can become a major issue. Tooth decay is caused when sticky plaque accumulates on the surface of the teeth. The acid in the plaque essentially eats away at the enamel, eventually wearing away at the tooth.

Parents should supervise and help children brush their teeth until they can firmly grasp and control a toothbrush on their own. Making sure your kids are removing plaque, bacteria, and food particles from their teeth every day will help prevent early tooth decay. If a cavity does develop, the typical treatment is a tooth filling, which involves drilling away the decay and filling the hole with a hard composite material.

In the case of sensitive teeth, there’s a variety of treatments that can help reduce the pain and discomfort that your child is experiencing. If the sensitivity is caused by a dental-related problem, such as a cavity, you should see your dentist right away to prevent the issue from becoming worse.

Dental Emergencies:

Dental emergencies can happen at virtually any time. Kids playing sports, roughhousing with siblings, or falling while riding a bike are all scenarios in which a dental-related accident can happen. These accidents can result in teeth chipping, breaking, or cracking. In more severe circumstances, a permanent tooth may be knocked out completely.

If your child’s permanent tooth does fall out, immediately call the dentist for an emergency appointment and retrieve the tooth. Place the tooth in a glass of milk, saline solution, or clean water. The dentist may be able to place the permanent tooth back into the socket, allowing it to reattach with the help of a retainer. Although there’s only so much a parent can do to avoid dental emergencies, a custom mouthguard is a great option to help prevent sports-related injuries. Check out more tips to keep your child’s smile safe.

Pediatric Gingivitis and Gum Disease:

You may have thought that gum disease is a dental problem only seen in adults. Unfortunately for parents, this is not the case. Gingivitis and gum disease can occur in children and are actually quite common in pediatric dental patients. Gingivitis is the precursor to gum disease, and it’s often marked by red, swollen gums, and slight bleeding when your child brushes or flosses.

Gum disease is more aggressive in children with poor oral hygiene. It often involves pain in the mouth, gum recession, and areas of swelling. In most cases, gingivitis and gum disease could have been avoided if more care was taken to brush and floss daily. In other instances, your child’s teeth may grow in so crooked and crowded that they cannot properly clean their teeth, resulting in areas of gingivitis or gum disease.

Orthodontic Problems:

Children rarely have perfectly straight teeth without any intervention. Luckily, there are many orthodontic treatments available to help your child or teen smile with confidence. Orthodontic problems are often a result of genetics, with the size and shape of the jaw playing a role in how your child’s teeth grow and come together. Some common misalignment issues seen in children include an overbite, underbite, open bite, and spacing problems.

It’s a good idea to have your child in for their first orthodontic appointment around the age of seven or eight. Orthodontic problems can mean more than just a crooked smile. Significant overcrowding and misalignments of your child’s teeth can result in jaw problems, cracked teeth, and oral hygiene issues.

Excessive Thumb Sucking:

Many infants, toddlers, and small children resort to thumb-sucking and pacifier use as a means to soothe anxiety. It doesn’t really become a problem until the child is older and still continues with this habit as prolonged thumb sucking can cause issues with the way a child’s teeth develop. Because of this, parents should not allow the habit to continue past the toddler stage.

Most often, chronic thumb sucking and pacifier use can cause what is known as an open bite. An open bite is when the upper front teeth don’t come together with the lower front teeth, leaving a gap even when the mouth is closed. This can make it difficult for your child to bite and chew, and can even affect their speech.

Dental Anxiety and Phobias:

Let’s face it, many adults are nervous when it comes to visiting the dentist. So it’s no surprise that kids and teens are often fearful of the experience as well. Dental anxiety can make it challenging to get your child in for their routine dental checkups and teeth cleanings. It can also stay with them into adulthood, affecting their dental health in significant ways.

The best way to combat dental anxiety in children is to make the experience relaxed, fun, and enjoyable. Choose a pediatric dentist that has experience working with anxious kids and has a process in place to help them. In addition, teaching your children the importance of dental care and making it a part of their routine can help in reinforcing the notion that they shouldn’t be scared.

At the end of the day, being a positive role model by brushing and flossing with your child and making sure they don’t miss their dental appointments are excellent ways to promote healthy dental habits for life.

By working with your children and partnering with your pediatric dentist, your kids can avoid many of these common dental problems during childhood.

Oral Health Foundation is delighted to announce the first bamboo toothbrush to gain accreditation from its expert panel

The charity has given its seal of approval to the Bambooth series of toothbrushes, which help aid good oral health and provide an environmentally friendly alternative to plastic brushes.

The toothbrush handles are made from muso bamboo, the world’s fastest-growing renewable resource, which is also completely biodegradable.  The brush also has a thinner neck for better handling in the mouth.

Dr Ben Atkins, President of the Oral Health Foundation, believes that this marks a great moment for the charity’s accreditation programme.

Dr Atkins says: “Most of us are looking for more ways to be kinder to the environment by ditching plastic and moving to natural and sustainable alternatives.  This has traditionally been very difficult in oral care as single use plastics are extremely common.  That’s why it is a terrific feeling to be able to accredit our first bamboo toothbrush.

“Bambooth is a great option for both adults and children who are looking for an eco-friendly toothbrush.  We are extremely proud to place it alongside more than 1,000 products that have passed through our accreditation programme over the last 30 years.”

The Oral Health Foundation’s accreditation programme examines product claims to make sure they are reliable and can be supported by scientific evidence.

Each product that passes through the charity’s expert panel is awarded with a kite mark to show that its claims have been rigorously checked and effectively verified.

Latest figures show one in three people in the UK use a manual toothbrush.

With recommendations advising that brushes are changed every three months, it means the average person uses up to 324 toothbrushes throughout their lifetime.

Co-Founder of Bambooth, Niamh McGill, is delighted by the Oral Health Foundation’s accreditation and explains why more people should consider making the switch to environmentally friendly brushes.

Ms McGill says: “More than 3.5 billion plastic toothbrushes are made every year and many of these end up in oceans and landfill.  This causes pollution, harms wildlife and effects the food chain.

“It may seem like a relatively small action but by moving to a bamboo toothbrush, you can make a big difference.  The Oral Health Foundation’s seal of approval shows that it is possible to look after your oral health while also giving a helping hand to the environment.”

The vitamin D is crucial for a dental implant success

If you have just lost one or more teeth, you may be considering dental implants as a solution. Gaps in teeth can affect your bite, lead to the movement of adjoining teeth, and even cause pain and discomfort so many patients opt for implant surgery for a lasting solution to their problem.

Because dental implants are considered ‘aesthetic surgery’, they are generally not covered by average health insurance plans in Lebanon, and they can be costly. Sometimes, insufficient bone may be present, occasionally leading to a need for bone implantation or even a sinus floor elevation, which also increases the cost.

When you opt for dental implants, it is vital to do all you can to increase your chances of success. One way to do so, research indicates, is by ensuring you have sufficient Vitamin D levels.

How Can Vitamin D Help?

If you are above the age of 65, then you are probably well aware of the importance role vitamin supplements can play in fostering bone and joint health. In general, as we age our bones and joints can suffer, making specific steps necessary, including losing weight, exercising regularly, and spending time in the sun or taking Vitamin D, which is crucial for the health of bones and which lowers the chances of developing diseases like multiple sclerosis, heart disease, and rheumatoid arthritis. New research also links low Vitamin D levels with a risk of cognitive decline and mental impairment.

Vitamin D can play an important role in ensuring dental implants last long-term because to a great extent, its presence or absence determines how successfully implants integrate into bone. Vitamin D can also promote gum health, helping to produce compounds which reduce bacteria levels in the mouth. Unless gums are healthy, implants don’t stand a chance of lasting in the long term, so regular cleaning and gum care are vital.

How to Obtain More Vitamin D?

Try to catch the sun’s rays for around 20 minutes daily, avoiding being outside in peak hours on very sunny days. You might also consider the use of a UV lamp, which will enable your body to absorb more Vitamin D. Supplements can also help; if you taking any other medication, make sure to consult your doctor and obtain his/her approval. There are online tests you can order which will let you know if your Vitamin D levels are low, so this is probably a great place to start.

If you are considering having a dental implant placed, consult your dentist about how Vitamin D (obtained through the sun’s rays or through supplementation) can help the likelihood of long-term success. By doing so, you will also enjoy a host of additional benefits, including keeping heart disease and other conditions at bay. Finally, try to enjoy a few minutes under the sun every day, ensuring you stay indoors during peak hours to avoid the risk of skin cancer or sunburn.
