Areas of Periodontics (MSc/PhD), Endodontics (MSc/PhD), Implant Dentistry (PhD), Biosciences & Biomaterials and Forensic Sciences (MSc/PhD).

The degree awarded is: "Master of Sciences" or 'Doctor of Sciences", with mention to the specific area of focus (Periodontics, Endodontics, Implant Dentistry, Biosciences & Biomaterials or Forensic Sciences).

The Graduate Program in Dentistry of the School of Dentistry at Araraquara -State University of Sao Paulo (UNESP) is the result of the fusion between the Graduate Programs of Periodontics and Endodontics in 2007. It was initially established in 1990, including only with the area of Periodontics. Currently, the program has four areas: Periodontics, Endodontics, Implant Dentistry and Biosciences, Biomaterials and Forensic Sciences.

The Program aims to foster innovative and relevant research of interdisciplinary reach in the fields of biology, pathology and regeneration of craniofacial tissues and also in the study of ethical and legal aspects pertaining to Dentistry.

The goal of the Graduate Program in Dentistry is to train and contribute to the building of high quality educators and researchers that are able to assume leadership positions both in the Academia and in Industry. Former graduates of the Program are currently in various academic positions in various Universities in Brazil and in other countries, as well as serving as industry consultants and in governmental committees.

Currently, the Program has 19 mentors, all faculty members of 6 out of 7 Academic Departments of the School of Dentistry. The mentors are all experienced researchers with PhD degrees (approximately 40% with post-doctoral training out of Brazil). Internationalization is a strong feature of the Program, who consistently sends out PhD students to Institutions and Universities in various countries of North America and Europe where they develop part of their experimental work in active collaborations. The Program has four formal cooperation agreements with Universities in North America and Europe. There is also a long-standing tradition of receiving graduate students from various countries from South and Central America that enroll as regular students to obtain their degrees.

Admission to the Program occurs via a selection process that occurs every other year (MSc and PhD programs). This selection process is advertised on the Program's website 6 months in advance.

Average duration of the course to obtain the degree is 24 months for the MSc programme (minimum 30 credits/450 hours in courses 56 credits/840 hours for the preparation of the Dissertation and 10 credits/150 hours in related activities including publications, presentations in meetings and conferences, assisting in didactic and practical teaching of undergraduate students) and 42-48 months for the PhD programme (minimum of 70 credits/1,050 hours in courses, 102 credits/1,530 hours for the development of the Thesis and 20 credits/300 hours in related activities including publication, presentation in meetings and conferences, co-mentoring of undergraduate students, assisting in didactic and practical teaching of undergraduate students).

CAPES (Coordination for Improvement of Higher Education Personnel), a foundation linked to the brazilian Ministry of Education, which is responsible for the accreditation and evaluation of all Graduate Programs in Brazil has given a grade 6 (out of a maximum of 7) to the Graduate Program in Dentistry in the last two consecutive tri-annual evaluations (2007-2009 and 2010-2013).
