A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease, and in the placement of dental implants. Periodontists are also experts in the treatment of oral inflammation.

The British Columbia Society of Periodontists (BCSOP) is an unbiased Society providing information to the dental and periodontal professional community as well as the general public. BCSOP also aims to be a directory for the public to find periodontists in their community.

Periodontal Disease Periodontal disease (periodontitis) is defined as inflammation of the supporting structure of the dentition, including hard and soft tissues.

While there are various forms of the disease, it is most commonly a slow disease process with dental plaque as the main causative factor. Everyone has some amount of dental plaque, however the accumulation of plaque along with other factors such as genetics, certain bacterial species, and habits such as smoking, can make one person more likely than another to develop periodontitis.

As periodontitis is a complex condition, it requires a substantial amount of knowledge and skill to diagnose and treat effectively. A periodontist usually works with the patient and his/her general dentist to treat the condition and prevent it from recurring.

Untreated periodontitis has a number of negative effects on a person’s health including the presence of chronic inflammation, loose and lost teeth, abscesses, pain, and loss of function.

The British Columbia Society of Periodontists is dedicated to keeping professionals updated on the latest news in the periodontal community. BCSOP also provides the exposure to potential patients by operating a directory listing all periodontal professionals working within British Columbia.

When do you need a Perio? Some patients’ periodontal needs can be managed by the general dentist. However, as more and more patients are exhibiting signs of periodontal disease, coupled with research that suggests a relationship between periodontal disease and other chronic diseases of aging, periodontal treatment may necessitate a greater understanding and increased level of expertise by a trained specialist.

Patients who present with moderate or severe levels of periodontal disease, or patients with more complex cases, will be best managed by a partnership between the dentist and periodontist.

Periodontists are experts in the treatment of oral inflammation and are familiar with the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease
